    SFI PRESS RELEASE

April 21, 2010 - SFI issues the following press release. Please review this carefully:

    1. Impact Racing has withdrawn its appeal of the decertifications of its products bearing SFI 3.2A, 3.3, 16.1, and 16.5 specifications manufactured in the years 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The decertifications of these products are now permanent.

    2. The decertifications are based upon a number of the affected products being non-compliant with SFI specifications concerning labeling and construction. In addition to the presence of non-compliant SFI tags and the absence of DOMs on products, 3.2A/5 suits made prior to 2009 have been constructed with non-compliant materials that, in SFI’s judgment, pose a safety risk to users of these suits.

    3. Impact Racing is permitted to maintain the certification for products bearing SFI 3.2A, 3.3, 16.1, and 16.5 specifications manufactured in 2009 and 2010. SFI’s investigation of the labeling and construction of these products is ongoing. Impact’s participation in the SFI specification programs ends June 22, 2010.

    4. Any Impact product with SFI specifications 3.2A, 3.3, 16.1, and 16.5 without a date of manufacture (DOM) is deemed to be a decertified product unless the manufacturer has provided the product user with proof that it was manufactured in 2009 or 2010. This proof must be presented to track officials upon request. Impact believes that its products made in 2009 and 2010 have the DOMs affixed to products to the extent mandated by SFI specification.

Just spoke with SFI to clarify Will's highlighted portion above.
After June 22nd, Impact will no longer be able to certify products at all.

Wow if you read Impact's website - they strongly disagree with SFI - but did they put on there the fact that they have been making SFI tags in Asia and oh by the way we may have done that BUT our product is still safe! Yea right!!! And if they weren't trying to screw all of us then why would they pull the appeal? If they want to help why don't they refund our money if they can't resert it?

Even if you took him up on his offer of buying the suit at 25% off it is my understanding by reading the SFI Press Release that you would have the suit delivered by June 22nd or it would be illegal. When it comes time for recertification of the suit in 5 years they would not be able to do it any way. So I would ask for more than 25% off

    Yet another Impact denial release

    http://www.impactraceproducts.com/

Every manufacturer of racing garments worth its salt uses Dupont Nomex thread in the construction of their racing suits. The FIA (Europe) and SFI (USA) now mandate that the thread used to affix the various parts of a garment must have the same TPP (thermal) heat resistance as the material it holds together.
There have been over the years many instances of garments AND safety belts falling apart at the seams, because the nylon thread used simply melted. Of course, the whole idea of making safety belts from nylon webbing is in itself, quite crazy! There are plenty of better fibers to do the job. For example, the materila of the safety belts in your road car has a higher melting point...
This of course is most dangerous because skin can be directly exposed to intense heat if the garment falls apart. In my many years of being an observer of such things, I have witnessed more than once how gloves, suits and shoes fell apart and caused grave burns to their wearer. Nomex thread (man-made Aramid fiber) is difficult to use as a thread because it is a hard and abrasive material that easily breaks the needles of the machines used for assembling the garments.
I recall an SFI meeting I attended in Las Vegas at the occasion of the SEMA show quite a few years back when SFI mandated that thread be part of the standard, a meeting in which several American and British gloves manufacturers protested the standard and claimed that nylon thread was safe.
What a crock. Only Dupont Nomex III thread or any material of higher fire and heat resistance is safe at this time, and I do not know of any other, possibly the Kermel used on the suits of firemen in Europe, but its mechanical resistance may not be as good.

For Impact to claim otherwise and declare themselves the experts over SFI at this time is in my opinion, simply ludicrous.

Impact is hitting the snooze alarm hoping their dreaming...

The biggest loozer here is the Impact product purchasers, myself included. Wake up Impact, you're done, this is in fact, reality. A reality that has hit alot of us right where it counts, twice! Once in the wallet to dish out more funds for new safety equipment that IS legit, and two, obstructing what we all love to do, RACE. Where's the class action lawsuit???
