I twisted off a 5/16 course allen head bolt in my chassis today. I thought I would just drill it out and re-tap the hole, but so far it just makes my drill bits smoke. What do I need to do?

3 possibilities that get tried in my shop:
    1-left hand drill bit
    2-use extract a screw set
3-place a 3/8 nut centered over broken leftovers and weld them together, than put wrench on it and screw out

Bust out the welder. Stack up a bead till you can get a grip on it. The heat will loosen it right up.

    Bolt out!!!

I have two sets of drill bits, silver and black. Silver bits smoke. Black bits with cutting oil made chips. I started with a small bit, and worked my way up in steps until I was at the proper bit size to tap a 5/16 hole. Ran a tap through what was left to clean the threads.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I had already heated the threaded boss to try to get the bolt to break loose, but it still wouldn't budge. That's how I broke it in the first place.
