I was setting up mag yesterday and wanted to know if what i was seeing is normal. this was my first time to do this.

I cut up and old cap so I could see the spark. I was setting timing up at 34 max, SBC , small cap with point terminal rotor button, lehay crank trigger

after I set the mag so spark would be directly in the middle, meaning the rotor pointed at middle of the cap terminal.

OK what I was noticing was the spark once it started would drag off the terminal. wish I had videoed it.

    Is this normal?

ps: we use a 8973 to roll timing out during run

Not sure if this helps, but the 8973 takes 4 degrees to process.

So what you are saying is that the rotor phasing was changing. That would indicate a worn mag drive or a or the generator is not locked down tight. It has nothing to do with the 8973. If the timing is stable it is not a big deal if it is a just a small amount of movement

not sure it it is changing Mike,
how long should the spark last?

the mag is mounted horizontally on front of engine with mid mag support

will check to make sure it is tight

Not sure if I am understanding you correctly when you say "how long should the spark last"? Can you reword the question or amplify the question a little.
