bought a jp-1 standard deck short block from guy in ca.the piston is .050 above the edge of sleeve or out of the hole.he told me i will need to run a .093 head gasket.the cylinder head is a brad 5.it will be used on a blown and injected drag car. he claims this combination is run all the time, but it seems to be a little to tight for my calculations.any engine builders out there that can help? thanks, harry

I'm not a hemi guy, but I think you're going to find that you'll need .055-.060 clearance. You could use a thicker head gasket.

    head gasket

Check port alignment with that thick gasket. I don't think you will be happy. Shorter rods. don

    in the hole

i agree with Don :D and So Dak ,shorter rods, put the piston at deck height or in the hole.could also run into valve to piston issues depending on cam lift.

    measure first

Is this a flat top piston or a domed piston? Pretty well all the domed pistons protrude out of the deck some. There are ways to measure the clearance. Some guys use clay stuck to various spots on the top of the piston and run it through a cycle and then measure the thickness of the compressed clay. Another way is to turn the motor upside down on the stand, run a cylinder to tdc for that cylinder and loosen the rod bolts and measure how far up into the cylinder you can push the piston. Before I bought new rods I would measure the clearance with the parts you have. Dave Germain

Don't you have a way to adjust the port alignment? like intake gasket thickness

    back in the hole

I want to thank all who responded in helping to solve this issue.took all the advice, checked, rechecked, found out the rods were too long,or the pins too low.Since the rods were used and the pistons new, decided to order new rods.harry
