Something I thought about after posting about car weight, (and before anyone says it, no I dont think our car is too powerful!)

My question is this, is there a limit to how light a car is in proportion to its horsepower???

IE - a top fuel dragster makes the most power but is there a limit on its weight? what I mean is how light could a the car be before it phsyically couldnt get the power down?

Hope it makes sense, not really a question more of a discussion.

Well on a 2800-2900 lb door car 100 lbs equals a tenth of a second or another reference is 20 hp equals a tenth of a second. So roughly 100 lbs is the same as 20 hp. I know guys before you bash me this is calculated physics and a rule of tumb for a reference. You may not believe it but it is close. The problem is other variables come into play such as track conditions, traction, and clutch. One of the big limiting factors for all drag racing cars is traction. The lighter you go the less weight on the back tires so the less traction. With todays traction control devices and launch retard we can over come a lot of these problems.

Well the weight/ET is another reason we want to lighten the car. Easy gain in ET.

That is what I meant though, how light could a top fuel car be before its too light to put the power down?

How much of the power? And where?

Well technically, They already can't put All the power to the ground, Otherwise the clutch would be locked up from the start. At which point on the track are you asking about?

With clutch managment and downforce, a Top Fuel car could make a pass over just about anything, rain, ice... Ask a Pro Stock guy, they'll tell you. :) Would it be fast? Probably faster than you think..

The trick is the launch and the transfer of the weight to the back tires to make it stick and hop up on the tire. So it isn't as much a question of how little weight, but how you apply the weight you have in the balance of the car, then at speed its a question of downforce. With the proper 4-link and suspension setup, you could probably get a stupidly light door car down the track with all the latest and greatest bells and whistles, and a bunch of downforce.
