I use grade 8 plated bolts from Ace Hardware with a grade 8 washer and never had a problem. Socket head bolts that a black in color from Ace are grade 8.

Not to disrespect Mike, but I was told that socket head bolts aren't graded. So how do you know they are grade 8?

It is a standard that black coated socket head bolts are grade 8. Thats according to a very large fastner supply company.

I believe the standard is either ASTM F912 or ASME B18.3 that requires black oxide finish socket head screws to be Grade 8.

Mike, unless the bolts are identified as meeting those specs, they can be anything. The identification will be either on the bolts or the packaging.

Many foreign nations make bolts with different types of coating that do not meet any standard specification and are sold in various outlets.

If you can verify the bolts at Ace were manufactured to those specs, that's great, but if you can't, I wouldn't use them.

Paul, I understand what you are saying but then the same applies to Grade marked bolts that are made in those foreign countries. We assume from the markings that they meet our standards but who checks that. I do know that the aircraft company I worked for specified that all the bolts had to be made US companies and I know the other aircraft company does the same thing. (Remember that next time you fly in a non US made plane such as an Airbus).

For those that don't have a hardware store close by, Spruce Aircraft has a reasonable supply of bolts http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/ha/bolts.html
They also have alumnium and 4130 material. I've purchased and used some of there aero tubing. Excellent prices and they ship to your door.

    Blessings.........Ron Clevenger.

We are all familiar with the markings that indicate grade 5 or 8, there is also usually an identification marking, examples would be a triangle or "H-K".
Here at work we run on the premise that a reputible mfg (one that abides to bolt standards) will put there marking on the bolt.

If there is no mfg marking than don't use it because there is no traceability. This is our philosophy.
