Most of the cars I see (including mine) have tin caps to go over the zoomies when they aren't running. Why is this done?

I have a FED, and we cover them so rocks/debris don't come off the tires, and down the pipes. One reason is if the exhaust valve is open, it can make its way into the cylinder, the main reason is, ever see how far a rock flys when you start the motor and launch it into orbit?

It is also a fun game to forget the covers are on and start the motor and see how far they fly. It is pretty embarrasing to happen on the starting line is front of everyone.

We used to put tennis balls in the boat zoomies,
must have lost several dozen of them!

We sand drag and the reasons are obvious. Its funny not much if any sand gets on anything during the run, but the tow back puts sand on everything behind the driver.

    covers

How about, so cold air does not go down the zoomie and warp a valve when they are hot?

Aw, the flying zoomie cover show. i've done it a few times....pretty embarassing.

I thought i was the only one that did it, until CHRR. I saw two other teams do it, so i'm glad i have friends in the clubhouse. :)

I do it to hide that pretty white color in the pipes, I hate when the owner starts saying stuff about pistons being expensive between rounds, thats Monday talk. I wonder what the forgotten zoomie cover distance record is? Ha Ha. Mine can't be to far off.

I fired mine in the pits @ Bakersfield this year, and had to get on the trailer to retrieve one of them
