Hi, Has anyone had any problems in TAFC or TAD with Crower's aluminum clutch covers, I already have the TI flywheel, The Large Ti Stands, And the Ti donut, just wondering if I need the cover as well? Mine is a 10.7" 3 disk

    Thanks,

If it does not have the raised lip on the back, the early ones were flat, I would not use it.

I have used Crower clutches for years both 10.7 and 10 inch. I haven't ever had any problems with them. I know that a Ti flywheel and donut and cover would seem stronger but it will also weigh more. More rotating weight will slow acceleration. All the Crower clutches I have had or used were Ti donuts and aluminum flywheels and covers. What sort of problems are you having with the clutch? Dave Germain

    Problems

    Thanks guys,

Dave, I am not having any problems as the car isn't finished yet but I am trying to make sure I alleviate any possible problems from parts selection before it ever starts. Just wondering if I need the cover. Some people have told me the flywheel will bounce unless you shim it, others have said the cover is more important. Just wondering if I need one or not. I figured this would be a good place to get some opinions from several people.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Trevor, I think what you are going to find is that with these high abuse blown alky cars, you will want the Ti cover as added piece of mind. If you are going to be making a lot of passes on it every year, you may want to invest in a Ti flywheel too. What happens is that these cars put so much heat into the clutch that it actually anneals the metal in your structural parts of the clutch. After about a season or so with a normal divisional schedule, maybe a test session or two and maybe a national event, the aluminum flywheels seem to start doing funny things because of the heat cycles and they don't flex symetrically throughout the clutch. Ti will normally last you 4-5 seasons, somtimes more before it starts showing signs. It will basically look like the clutch is out of balance when you look at your rear mains and sometimes does even worse things if it's let go for too long. Just watch your stands and the lugs where they meet/drive the pressure plate and they will start telling you as well. If they look hammered on one side moreso than the other, heads up.

This doesn't mean that all used clutches this old are bad either, just something to keep your eyes peeled for.

    Clutch

    Hi Justin,

I have the TI flywheel already which is why I'm thinking about the cover as it is the last aluminum piece of the puzzle. Ideally later on down the road I may pick up another ti donut and stands and make a backup clutch. I'm told the aluminum covers will crack? any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Trev

Over time they will for sure, and aluminum will crack a lot faster than Ti will. The problem you run into is that the bigger the clutch, the stronger it's components need to be to last just because of all the mass of the clutch being so far from the center. That being said I would definitely recommend the Ti cover over the aluminum.
