I am changing combos from a blown bbc to a blown kb olds. I have been running an msd 10 ignition for the past 2 seasons with no problems, I am considering upgrading to a mag 44.
My question is, will I just be wasting money, or will I see a difference?
I am limited on budget, so I need to get the most bang for the buck.

    Thanks, Jason.

That would depend on if the MSD 10 could support your engine and tuneup. Regardless I think that you will see some improvement but how much is hard to tell.

I think you can have your 10 updated to a 20, call msd and ask them.;)

The msd 10 box I have is the older one with 2 coils. I was told that it was the better one to have.

Sorry to say, according to MSD and from my checking them out you where told wrong. That one was short lived in production. I don't remember all the particulars, but if it's been working for you I guess that's the bottom line.

    Blessings.........Ron.

I suggest you call MSD Tech Line: 915-855-7123

Call our tech line Monday through Friday, 7am to 6pm Mountain Standard Time

From what I understand they had a lot of problems with the duel coil, one side was capacitive discharge and the other side was inductive. The only info I have on the MSD-10 is that at the plug it delivered 315-345 millijoules up to 30 degrees duration. The primary was rated at 520v.

The new MSD 10 Plus has one coil they call "stacker technology" They mated the inductive and capacitive together. The primary side is rated 620v and the energy delivered to plug is 700 millijoules.

One article I read it seemed to indicate that you could use the new coil with the original unit, but I don't know that for sure or what you would have if it was possible.

Call MSD and talk to them. Ask for someone that is knowledgeable with the MSD 10 Plus.

    Hope this helps..........blessings.............Ron.

By the joules, the only thing hotter than a 10+ is a 44 mag. So is it a good bang for the buck? I'd say it depends on what the rest of the motor is, especially blower.

My opinion (not experience) is that the 44 will make more power but you will get more HP/$ if you spend it on the blower and fuel system.

This winter I hope to dyno compare my SM IV's to MSD 10+, simply because the 10+ is local and available.

Thats exactly why I asked the question. I already have an msd 10, & according to msd, the only hotter spark is the 44 mag. However I am still running an older Kuhl Hi Helix & I need to upgrade to a modern blower. so If I dont have to spend money on the ignition, I will be able to buy a better blower. I have seen blown motors make 2000 hp with a mag 12, so I was hoping to achieve those hp numbers with an msd 10.

Just got off the phone with MSD. Your old style MSD-10 cannot be upgraded or converted to the specs of the New MSD 10-Plus.

Your 10 puts out 315-345 millijoules to the plug for up to 30 degrees crank rotation

The new MSD 10-PLUS puts out 700 millijoules to the plug up to 30 degrees crank rotation.

Your unit would be comparible to the MSD Pro-Mag 12 which puts out 300 millijoules to the plug up to 26 degrees crank rotation.

Hope that clears up any questions you have or any previous information I provided.

    Blessings...........Ron Clevenger.

I had a msd 10 plus with 16 volt batteries 2k hp never a problem but if your running the older one Ide either get a new 10 plus or go all the way to the 44you can find 10 plus used for $600 to $700
