in theory it shouldnt matter, the tang is only there to locate the bearing while installing it, so it doesnt move forward or back when you tighten the cap and bind on the cranks radius, i bought a BAE motor a couple of years ago that actually had tangs on both sides of the bearing ive never seen them again and cant seem to find them and no one could ever explain to me why they where done, the bearing's crush is actually what holds the bearing in the block, the tang is definately not there to stop it from turning, some late model japanese engines i have had apart at our engine shop dont have tangs at all you just have to be careful when you assemble them, so no i dont believe it matters where the tang goes either side should be fine in my bae block ive had them in every position and havnt seen any difference

Looking at the motor from the front with manifold up, crank turns clockwise, you put the bottom bearing with tang to left side, Top bearing with tang to right side, Cap will help it not to spin. not much but it will help. ;)

I put mine in just the way Eli mentioned....on 3" mains....with the tang pushing against the cap in the direction the crank turns - and when I asked around, some said that there was a dual tang bearing available a few years ago that the Top Fuel teams were using to help hold the bearing in place...custom piece?

MBR (Fontana) has it, works really well, bearings do not move in normal engine operation, i.e no fretting. The main cap design is also excellent, no movement at all on the parting faces.
