Been running a 354 hemi @ 391", 8:71, alcohol, turbo400, 2800 lbs nostalgia, 7.60 @ 177mph but we have been overstressing the iron block (cryogenic treated, filled, steel caps plus steel girdle). Blocks last about one season, usually split a cylinder wall from the head stud. Otherwise reliable at 8,500 RPM with lots of carefull maintenance. Been running this combo since 2000.

Just changed to a 451" KB block with BA Fatheads, from a dragster, screw blower, a little less weight, same car. Looking for longevity. We have a 10 qt oil pan, one qt filter, 3 qt accusump + lines, dual pickup pump #12 AN lines with about 1/2" clearance pickup to pan bottom (as purchased). After reading all these threads, we have become concerned that what worked before may not work here. We are ready to go, 60 Wt oil, .004" rod, .005" main, 125 psi oil pressure. Expect max rpm 8,000-8,500 as before.

Any advice regarding oil quantity before our first pass by the end of this month would really be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Hank Wilko

i would start with 15. watch the gauge when you stop from burnout, if it drops way off put more in. i know it sounds like the hillbilly way, but us hillbillys are good folks most of the time.:D
    hope this helps

Darren is rite we run 16qt. after the burn out oil pressure will drop go on back up when you bring it into the stage beams the r's will be up and so should the oil pressure I run through the lights with around 165 psi at 9500rpm's the old rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1,000 rpm good luck Dave

    Oil Fill

    Thanks, Guys

This info puts my mind at rest, and confirms my suspicions.

With all this oil, are you sure I still need an oil pump??

Could save some hose and plumbing, you know!

    Thanks again.

Change your gearing, give it some load. You should be able to run easy 7.0's with that motor and only spin it 7500 on an easy tuneup. That's how you can get some life out of your parts.

    331 hemi

    Gene,

It's the same Hank Wilko, allright.
It was 1976, put the engine into your altered, went to the Indianapolis Nationals, beat Gearge Montgomery's twin turbo ohc ford hemi and ran 7.90's.
Doesn't get any better than that.
Good to hear from you again.
