My understanding is that the starter motor/planetary/drive dog assembly is the same regardless if crank or blower starting.

So I think with different mounts... Yes you can use some of it.

I've been using my old dragboat starter with the RCD cage for three years with no problem. Just make sure you've got the dogs/cage spaced for full engagement when extended and fully clearanced when retracted. We always tap the switch to extend the dogs into the dogs of the blower so to minimize the jolt on the belt. I've heard some people say that crank starters and blower starters had different windings for different cranking speeds to compensate for direct drive (crank) vs underdrive/overdrive of a blower setup, but I've never seen any real need in our setup.

Evidently yours does not have a knob at the tail end of the starter which screws the drive dogs together? That way they don't slam into engagement.

To a small extent you can control the RPM of the starter motor with Volts. The aircraft starters that I'm familiar with can be run on 12v/24v/36v or 48v. Ours is mounted direct with the crank and 24v will spin it just fast enough, but we switched to 36 and it fires almost instantly.

Correct, there was no way we could have the thumb screw arrangement on a dragboat, never could find anyone crazy enough to ride back there.... :D

Edit-Guess I should clarify that, in case some are not familiar, the crank snout starter on a dragboat has to be fixed mount, where the crank snout starter on an A/FD has the keyhole quick-disconnect like a blower starter.

I think the screw arrangement can be added??? It makes me cringe thinking about slamming it in. I've done it accidently a few times:(

I run a crank mounted starter on my BAE engine and it was a blower starter when I bought it and I removed the cage, I run the thumb wheel in between rounds but I have had to hit it without turning the thumb wheel in,with no ill effects.

If you say so, I just don't remember ever seeing one on a boat. How does the screw back off when the engine fires?

If you have the chance I would sugest you go to Gadsen, or High Points and take close look at every TAF, TAH, and TFH.

I converted my crank mount to snout mount. Call JR at RBS he sells the thumb wheel to manually enguage the starter. Its a simple add on as well as the rest of the parts you will need for the conversion. As I said it is very easy to convert.

    Starter

Call Meziere (Dig deep when you buy the stuff.) You will need to mount the starter to the mid plate Depends on how much room you have and any tubes in the way. There are alot of guy out there who do it, so maybe there is a different way. I had very little room. Don
