    ???

The magneto needs switched to earth/ground (the block) to shut it off. As close to the magneto as possible is best, and it must be a good, clean, connection.

If you're using your battery for starting, it's best to earth it as close to the starter (on the engine block) as possible to reduce any resistance in the starting circuit. Resistance will slow down current flow and reduce the starter motor's output. If you have to ground it to the chassis, make sure the earth point is clean, dry, free of paint, same for the connection between the chassis and the engine. Make sure you use an earth wire to the engine block, and it must be the same size (or bigger) as the main battery cables.

    Yeah, that's it! :)

The important part of that is the 'block to the coil' (via the switch of course). It means the circuit to shut down the magneto is as short as possible.

The rest of it is for good earthing (grounding) to reduce/eliminate electrical 'noise' that will upset the datalogger, and ensure there is a good earth circuit for any electrical components. Remember, the shielded cables for the datalogger must be earthed at the sensor... ;)
