:mad:When putting the main caps back in my BAE, I have a very hard time keeping the brgs in place in the caps. Because the caps fit so tight in the block, if I tap them in place with a plastic hammer, some times the brgs will want to pop out of the cap.
Is there a trick to doing this and keeping the brgs in place?
    thanks for the help....

I use small rubber bands they work great and you don't have to tie knots with oily fingers......cut the band with side cutters when you get close

most teams carry an alloy floor jack around with them,so if you are doing it with the motor in the car while its up on stands, use the jack and some sort of extension (wooden hammer handle) and use the jack to push the cap up gently there is no sharp hitting action so the bearing will stay right were it should be, done it a bunch of times and they never pop out

    pony tail

back when I was working for Shelly Howard, we used the little rubber bands girls use for pony tails, then cut when the cap is close.

You can also place your thumb in the center of the cap and lightly press out on the sides of the bearing to give it more clamping pressure.

The way I do it, is lightly tap the bearing back in the block with the slide hammer, with the crankshaft turned so that I can see the bearing. I tap it up, watching the bearing to make sure it hasn't jumped off, then when it gets where enough threads are sticking through the cap, I start the cap nuts (w/o washers) and run the cap back up with the impact. I then zip the nuts off and install washers. If your bearings are excessively loose, this will not work too well. You'll need a rubber band or tie-strap.

If these are used bearings and they are excessively loose in the cap, could be time for new bearings.

If it makes all the bearings loose in the cap after just a few runs, could be time for a line bore or line hone.

Put the cap up into position enough to get a nut on the stud, then manually start the nut winding up the cap to get the other nut w/washer onto the other stud,.again manually with a ratchet spin /tighten the nut up alternating nuts untill the cap seats the block then torque. Dont use a cordless or impact, its the vibration that will knock the bearing out, unless there is other probs like what Will has mentioned.

I am suprised nobody mentioned The Von Uffens block spreader. I had the same problem until I started using Von's Block spreader on my new BAE billit block. You can check it out on blockspresder.com or cal Von at 925-765-3737
He is located in Danville, Ca. He is a great guy to deal with and has other real nice speciality tools.
    Hope this helps you guys.

i use zip ties to hold the bearing in place until i get where i can put the nuts on.

to remove them I made a plate with jack bolts that push against the frame rails, works a lot better than a slide hammer.

Mike Cooper told me: Spread the bearing a little wider, so it's a tighter fit. Put some lube on the back side of the bearing and place in cap( will create a suction and hold bearing better in the cap when you hit it), Lube face of bearing and install cap.
