ok , i have a 540 blown alky bbc . standard big opening 14.71, dart 355 heads , anyways right now i have a nitrous motor and the question has to do with temp. the block is filled and i run alky on both combos. i have a temp sending unit in the right side bank in the head. when i first switched to alky i still had the water system on the car so i had a typical water temp gage to go by, now i dont have any cooling system at all and i installed a head temp sending unit . i was jus wondering how i should judge temp on the motor. i would think head temp is going to be higher than water temp. any suggestions. its been about 4 yrs since i had this thing on the track and i use to run it in the 180 range at the burn out. now im not sure where i'm at with temp. thanks guys

    ?

Are you now running water heads with no water or are you running solid heads ? Makes a difference to measuring temp.

    Dry water heads

Unfortunately I dont have any experience with dry water heads. No doubt someone else here will know where to take a measurement.
    Cheers

I like the idea of at least running water in the block... not saying you need a pump and radiator. I think the empty water jackets will skew your readings.

    head temp

I run the dart pro one water heads without any water on my blown bbc -
I monitor the temperature on both heads at the backside of the motor; they
differ about 40 - 50 deg. (at the rh. head the exh. port is closer)
I try to stage at about 140 - 150 deg. (right head temp.) and go thru the traps with 50 deg. more.
I would not recommend to heat the heads to more than 240 to 250 deg. because warp will occure. (my experience)

    regards

thanks alot , thats what i was wondering. i think i might have a leak cause i seem to heat up quickly . seems like with in a min or two we're at 165 which might be right ??? jus seems like when i had the water in it it took alot longer. i know it will take it longer with water but i thought head temp would be about the same with or with out? thank you again

Do your temps keep climbing or stabilize?

If they keep climbing you may need to richen your BV.

right now i have my nitrous motor in. kinda newish car was jus gonna sort it out before the blown motor. single carb motor w/nitrous, both on alky they seem to keep climbing. it got to about 190-200 and i shut it off. this was running in the shop, idle with some rapps on the throttle. seemed like it heated up real quick, but i wasnt sure beings i was using head temp instead of water temp.????
