44 amp mag too big for a 426ci motor?

    Hi all.

We run a 426ci KB hemi with BAE fuel heads (172cc chamber) and a 14-71 blower, and i've just acquired a 44 amp magneto for the combination. Now this would be the first time i've ever seen a 44 amp mag on a blown alky application with a engine displacement less than say 450ci (kinda about the engine size for a modern day TAD?).

So basically, have I overkilled on the ignition system? I understand it'll be all about burning the fuel and getting it into the system to burn it, but have I got insufficient volume to be able to use it properly? Should I consider increasing the size of the motor before implementing one?

    Thanks!

we ran a 426 with a K8 hh in a doorslammer with a 44.No problems just keep your plug gaps tight. With the gap set mag 4 style the plug boots and wires got burned, arching everywhere.

    no

burn more fuel, make more power, doesn't matter if it's a 426 or 226.

with lower amp mags you have to run more timing to get complete combustion. with the old mallory's years ago they ran 38 degrees of timing on the big chamber stuff like you have. you can take that down by 10 or more with a 44.

horsepower is the net of horsepower made and horsepower used. if you have to run can run less timing to make the same horsepower, you'll use less making it, resulting in greater net hp.

My fuel system guru (Ron Evans) told me there is no such thing as too much spark, but if you don't put enough fuel with it, it'll run on aluminum (i.e. pistons :D)

Thanks guys for getting back to me on this.

Sounds like we will have our work cut out for us to get a good baseline fuel setup, don't want to start eating them pistons up, had a difficult enough job getting hold of them.

Looking forward to the new season starting, ran a best of 6.85 on a safe tuneup with the same motor but with a pair of Supermag 3's, looking forward to seeing what we can do with the MSD 44 on board.
