Hello, I have a new set of Brooks 65 series 6.80 aluminum rods, hemi journal .990 pin, and they didn't come with any paperwork. What are the torque specs for these? Chris

Call Brooks and ask Jerry. He would know what bolts you have.

Most rods out there are torqued to 90 ft lbs.

But not all. Miller rods are 100 ft lbs. Better call Jerry.

According to the Brooks 65 instruction sheet this is the torques procedure if you have BLACK washers under the bolts. If you have silver washers then let me know and I will have to dig deeper.

Brook’s 65 rod Torque Procedures with BLACK washers.
    Torque is 90 ft/lbs with 50wt oil.
    Torque first to 25, then 45, 65, 75, and final to 90
Only torque rods when they are cool.

NOTE: Double check that the tapered side of the hole in the washer is towards the bolt head. If you can't see the taper when you pull the rod bolt back a little then the washer is upside down.

Like I said if you have silver washers then let me know.

    Rod Torque

    Mike,

How do you torque the rods during elimination rounds when they are hot?

Are you able to cool them down in time to torque cool? If so how do you get them cool quick enough.

If you are torquing them hot do you change the torque spec?

    Thanks

    Gary Mangiafico

Gary, that is the instructions from Brooks. I understand what you are saying and I agree with you that there is no way to comply. I guess it gives Brooks a way out if they break.

    rods

Could you put them in water to help cool quicker?? Not cold water! you could build a rack and hang the big end and have the piston out of the water

Interesting info Mike: I have the same rods and had the same question, so I called Jerry at Brooks just three days ago. He didn't mention anything about a black or a silver washer. His instructions to me were to use motor oil only (no moly or other lube), and torque them in 3 stages, first to 45 lbs, then 60, then a final torque to 75.

I wonder why the discrepancy between what Jerry told me, and the Brooks paperwork you have, that says to torque to 90?

Ok the 75 ft lb makes sense IF they have silver washers under the rod bolts.

For SILVER WASHERS -with 50 wt oil first torque to 25 then to 45, 65 and then a final of 75 ft lbs.

I have the Brooks Tech Sheet here. If anyone wants a copy then email me at mike.c@mindspring.com and I will email it to you.

I run venolia rods in my blown hemi with the black tapered washers and I torque to 90#s. never had a failure on the first set with over 80 runs, and this set has about 40 runs with no problem. KNOCK ON WOOD LOL

How much boost and rpm are you pushing your motor to H Brown? I'd like to get some life out of these, 75 passes would be great. Looking at 7500 rpm max on my motor. Chris

Chris i turn any where from 8200-8500. have slipped a few times when flywheel bolts broke twice and went to 9200 and 9600. my average boost #s are 32 to 34 at 33% and have gone as high as 39 to 40 # when the bolts broke. i know they say change 20 to 25 runs but me on a very tight budget and have to push the life, but my tune ups are very lazy cause we runaverage of 4.30- 4.40 ets at 3025# automatic door car.

    Rods

I believe the 65's are the Chevy profile, lighter rods and are torqued at the lower torque. I am thinking they do not come with the black washer that is why Jerry did not mention 90#.

If I have to torque the rods when they are still really hot, I drop the torque from 90 lbs to 80 lbs. Had lots of problem pulling the threads out of the rods before I started doing that.
