    Checking in from vacation (sort of) in Oz...

    Ron August Jr. drove Maurice Fabietta's TAFC (formerly owned by Bob Gallio) to a final round appearance at the final event of the Australian drag racing season at Willowbank Raceway. I traveled Down Under with Ron, his right-hand man Mike Del Giorgio, and Mike's wife Amy to do the bottom end on the car and also do the touristy thing during the previous week by visiting Surfers Paradise, Sydney, Cairns, and Brisbane.

    We had many unforeseen problems during the weekend, but we and Maurice's crew worked together to get the car turned around each time and pick up the performance on every pass. We qualified on the bump at no. 8 with a 5.86 and defeated national e.t. record holder (5.529) Ben Bray and New Zealander Tim Watkins (in Jeff Burnett's 2006 car) before losing to newly-crowned Top Alcohol champion Wayne Newby (dragster) in the final round, 5.67 to 5.76.

    It was an absolute blast. The crowd was wild. The Aussie racers and track officials treated us great. All of the finalists did a parade for the crowd from finish line to starting line, and each finalist did an interview on the Jumbotron and received a trophy or plaque. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun at a race from start to finish.

    Congrats to Ron and his family, who he wishes could have been here, and thanks to all the racers and people who made this trip so much fun.

    Brad; now you know why I've gone down there 14 times!
    Great people, good food, great racers and the beer is COLD!
    (been to Europe 12 times also, so I know about the cold beer)
    BTW, Wayne Newby's car is a freshened Meyer car (1990 E.P. Slick)

    congrats on a great weekend!

    i plan on heading down under around Christmas to hit the Boxing Day Event and the next race at Willowbank...

    maybe I can find a ride down there :)

    Maurice had to explain some of these to us after Amy said, "I'll be rooting for you guys in the stands."
    I've never seen such happy-looking people claiming to be pissed before.
