Why are many (PDRA) promod cars removing the lock-up system?

Lots have found the lockup too abusive to bottom end.Lockup at wrong time and motor will pull the rods out. Like any tool the wrong use can be bad done exactly right it works great but how often is exactly right?

    I don't understand this thread.

If the lock-up engages, and stays locked up, why would it not be any different than a clutch?

It's not. The lock-up can be more abusive on drivetrain but with the right parts & usage it's definitely a performance aid. The newer lock-up controllers are multi-stage or "soft lock" so it's not such a jar on everything. The closer the gear ratios the less abusive they are. I used a controller that would unlock during the gear change as well as unlock if the engine RPM dropped below a set level. They don't lock and unlock instantly so unlocking on shifts merely softens it a little. I was an early adaptor so went through a learning & parts curve before figuring out the best way to use it.
