Looks like a eneritia wheel. Dmpe has one .

 

Bill Phillips had an inertia dyno; I think Les Davenport had one at his shop; sold? to the current shop owner and I think that Walt Austin might have one of this design........eh?

I'm nearly certain that there was only three like these....if you're looking for others. I wouldn't be surprised if some truck/tractor pulling guys have one as shown in article..sassy engines comes to mind. Miner brothers maybe?

Fred built one of the first if not the first inertia dynos. Very similar to Rage's except the way they spin up the weight and Rage's has a larger inertia weight looking at the picture. Fred sold one to the Rettel bros. and one to BAE. and kept one for himself. Most of the others around are basic copies of Fred's design. For those that don't know Fred he is one smart son of a gun. I doubt there is anything he couldn't do once he sinks his teeth into a project. I helped Fred with some of the grunt work on the initial pulls on it so he could get it up and running. And since then I've spent a serious amount of time doing dyno sessions at Freddie's with just about every alcohol car Ive been involved with. You can learn a ton there as long as you keep in mind the difference between dynos and the race track.

 

I'm quite sure that Davenports dyno was a water brake as I recall people talking about it pulling the engine down in rpm. What is the story with his shop, did Les retire?

 

I'm no expert re Les' operations but I understand that Brad Lastokin who used to work for Les took over/bought the engine shop part, now (Brad's Automotive Machine) many years ago and Les still runs his Acceleration Enterprises operation.
Re Bill Phillips, I'm not saying I know he had the FIRST inertia dyno or anything but he showed me his dyno way, way back; it had to be in the early 1980's I think; back when he was working on the rotary valve hemi and got some Canadian Research Counsel funding for continuation of his efforts.

Are these inertia dynos running 2500–3500 turbo engines or does that not work with inertia loading?

 

The wheel on Austin's isn't that large. I'm pretty sure it was a Davenport piece. At least the coupler is.

Darren Mayer has had an Inertia Dyno like that one, for a good 9-10 years now. We dynoed an MBE Headed Screw Blown Hemi there 3 months ago. Made 18 pulls in the two days dynoing.
It worked perfect, and we learned a lot!!
