Clutch compared to quick drive

    Hello,
    still running a 2 disc 10.7 Crower / B&J 3 speed in my Blown Pro Mod (FIA legal, roots, 20% overdrive). Thinking about changing to a 3 disk or even switching over to a Quick Drive/Converter for next saison. what do you guys think is the best to go for regarding set up and maintenance. Not sure if running a Converter will help us or even make it easier setting up the car driving through shake/spin zone etc.

    You won't beat a converter as far as maintenance between rounds. Get a good fluid cooler, plug it in after the run and make sandwich.

    Quick Drive paired with latest and greatest converters seems to be a great combination these days. Converter technology has come a long way and there is more and more data to compare to every day that is also pushing development. And between round service is a joke when you're used to a clutch.

    After years as a die hard clutch guy (in no small part because my job depended on it), I've come to appreciate what converters can do. They seem much more forgiving in how early wheel speed(first .5 second) is applied. But just like a clutch, you can get the fluid too hot and lose top end application, especially in 1/4 mile. I believe there is a slightly larger window to the slow side of wheel speed with a converter. As for driving through shake easier or causing less, in some cases it can be even worse with a converter. But the consistency is far greater than that of a clutch, so it can definitely aid in tuning car setups. It definitely isn't any easier to get the tune up right than it is with a clutch either.

    I will still contest that unless your rules allow a lockup converter, in the 1/4 mile, a clutch will be faster from the 660' mark on, although converter combos these days are awfully capable of showing me otherwise on occasion. But clutches are messy and a lot of service work, especially in a Pro Mod, not to mention they are considerably more difficult to drive consistently as well.

    Thanks for the advice Jason,Justin,
    I not so familiar with parts I have to use when switching over. Need the quick Drive for sure but not sure if I can go with my Browell bell housing? And is there any better or less quick Drives on the market?
    Will stay with the B&J because we never had trouble with it broken sprags or what ever.

    Marco, since you have a B&J then a Quickdrive is the answer. We switched to a Lenco/ Bruno combination with both Coan and Chance converters and have never looked back. Since you are in Europe you know about how good our performance is. It is costly to switch, you do need a new Bellhousing so you will also need a new driveshaft because the depth of the Bellhousing is different. Mick Synder of Snyder Motorsports makes a setup for a converter cooler that runs on European voltage. I highly recommend you switch.

    Hi Marco
    sounds like a good move , more and more people have converters . You will need an off board cooler (we made our own). I have a bellhousing that may be of use to you

    Marco, would like to add that you really need a MSD Grid if you are using a converter.

    You can't change the converter setting like you can on a clutch. You can be in the staging lanes and change finger weight on the clutch. With the Grid you can plug in the laptop and make last second changes in timing to affect the converter. On e degree of ignition timing is 75-100 HP so if you are using a Six Shooter and taking out 10-16 degrees on launch it is too hard to put it all back in smoothly like a Grid timing curve does. Sometimes you have to make a two degree jump with a chip so that is 150 to a 200 hp instantaneous jump in power that is felt on the rear wheels and that can cause you to spin the tires. So with chips you can't be on the edge on tuning and have to back off so you will not spin the tires at chip change. The Grid makes the smoothest transition on timing change. This does also apply to the other software controlled timing boxes

    Doing the same thing with the clutch now ......locking up the clutch almost 100% in the gear changes doing all wheel speed control with the grid .clutch is just alone for the ride. only thing to do between rounds is just cool, and from time to time add some counter weight if its not locking up fast enough. still pull it out every race and grind everything between races.with pre ground packs its about a 1 0r 2 hour job no big deal lol cheaper than the new 20,000.00 lock up convertor and 2-3 speed setup

    Lockup converters are not allowed in a FIA or NHRA legal car. This is great and saves a lot of money

    Really?..... I guess it does free up funds for the 25K+ super whammy supercharger and whatever else comes along. Another example of NHRA thinking (or lack thereof).

    The Quick Drive is a really nice unit. You can put a B&J or Lenco behind it. It has some nice features to it and delivers a consistent charge pressure to the converter. I also like the fact it is a stand alone converter drive, so you can run the best fluid for your converter in the converter drive and the best fluid for your trans in the trans. Not to mention when you are cooling the unit, the fluid flows through the converter, so you get everything cooled off fairly quickly.

    At the moment the clutch is faster in the back half, but converter technology is cutting into that advantage pretty quick.

    It will take some getting used to, but the biggest bit of advice I can give you if you make the swap from a clutch is tighter is not always better. I was told that numerous times, but until I proved it to myself, I didn't believe it.

    You are right Will tighter is not better on the converter. Coan and Chance will leed you through the selection on the correct pump and stator
