Ran into a strange situation testing a few weeks ago using a new ProMag 44.
I'm running a blown nitro small block with timing set at 50 degrees. 5 degrees less than I ran with a Super Mag 5

No external timing, just what's set in the mag.

Set the crank at 50 degrees TDC and placed the 44 rotor just at the leading edge of #1 cyl. terminal.

Car fired right up but we are unable to get the flash of the timing light to flash at the 50 degree mark.
The flash of the light is probably around 80 degrees. Almost out of sight due to crank support in the way.
We tried 1 new and 2 used MSD timing lights and they all did the same thing.
Rotating the mag was not able to bring the mark into range.

Where the motor seemed to be running normal, we even made a short 1/8 pass with no issues.

However, trying to use the light is fruitless and it bothers me to run it just set mechanically with no way
to actually verify the timing via a light.

Yes, everything is well grounded using #8 copper. Both heads, transformer, frame etc etc.
Standard points box with no rev limiter or timing controls.

I called MSD and their quote to me was if you actually made an 1/8 pass, there is nothing wrong with the entire Mag system. If a 44 fails it doesn't partially fail, it just quits.

I was using my previous Taylor spiral core wires but have just ordered new MSD wires just to rule that out.
Any thoughts on what could cause this issue?

I've seen this twice where the timing degree ring was mismarked. May not be it but worth a look.

Wish it were that easy. Same marks that I ran when using a Super Mag and timing was fine.

Timing on Promag is not the same as a regular mag. A regular mag retards as it is put under load and a Promag has a special circuit that keeps the timing the same. So your five degrees difference probably helps this. But your timing light is probably telling you the truth and you and you should lift the mag and rotate the shaft until you get the timing mark where you want it
