Block repair or scrap

    Hi,

    I have an older KB block that was cracked between the cylinder sleeves. I got the block already welded and now after machining the welded area the crack reopened with a "ping" according to the machinist. I don´t know how the repair was done, with what rod etc. but I would like to give it another try before scraping the block.

    Have anyone had a block repaired in this area with good results ?

    I have tried that kind of repair, it is just too thin, it will just crack again. If it is not going to run 3000 hp, I would just run it the way it is.

    I have done a few any good fix the crack has to be 100% removed and weld zone very very clean .i fixed an older KB block last year that was cracked from main web to the deck

    don't mean to hijack this thread but i have a new century block with a couple of lifter bores that are damaged from a broken rod. who could i send some pictures of the damage to so that i could find out if the damage can be repaired? thanks

    How bad is bad?
    I fixed my TFX last time by just making "sleeves" on the lathe, boring the lifter bores. heat the block- freeze the sleeves
    then rebore the lifter bores
    we did all this on the mill and never removed the block from start to finish until it was done
    hasnt been a problem since
    AJPE sells these lifter sleeves already made too
    they also do the repair if you live close

    Indian fixed one for us once were they welded in a block and remachined the bores
    Unfortunately he Is gone now.

    I fixed a Dart BBC block that had half of the lifter bore broke out. I built it up with weld re-bored it and put a bronze sleeve in it

    Block repair

    What is your experience as far as filler alloy and shielding gas ? I have used 4043 and Argon until now and I would really like to try either a 4043 or a 4047 rod with Argon and Helium mixed gas.

    The good wetting and high silicon content of the 4047 sounds like it is worth a try :)

    KB filler rod.

    I called blacks last year about welding. Stage 15.
    He said.
    206t6
    6061t6
    Or
    2319 if the top two are not available.

    Talk to Lowell and New Century performance. I have heard that they will machine a block out of billet aluminum, machine out the old lifter bores and weld the new block in, then re machine the lifter bores. That is if it's real bad, otherwise they can do welding and/or bushings to fix the area.

    They may be able to do the repairs or may know someone who can.

    Shield Gas

    I thought the best way was with pure Helium due to the heat transfer properties of the gas . . . . .
