I have several customers, blown alky included, running those without fanfare.
Did your buddies give you a plausible reason why not to?

I've been told this is because your 4 link suspension need to be hammered to full power at the start to stick your tires as it is supposed....

I ran one for years and finally took it off. I was two stepping it also to make sure the launch rpm was the same regardless of weather. Last year I removed it and now leave at wide open throttle on the two step with an NOS nitro solenoid bleeding fuel off while on the two step. No air bottle to fool with , no lines to come loose , and saved appox 3 lbs in the process. Plus the injector is alot cleaner looking now and less chance of tire shake breaking all the shit hanging off the side of the hat. You could mount the air throttle somewhere else ( at the pedal) but it make adjusting it a bitch.

We run an air throttle on our blown hemi. No issues. We have the air controller set to around 5000 rpm and set the 2 step to 4500. Make sure the blades are set to open immediately. Don't let them open slowly to control wheel speed or anything like that.

I'm thinking of getting this instead of the air throttle....
    http://fuelinjectionent.com/webstore/product_info.php?products_id=181

This is the rational and their claim from the web site...
"When a fuel injected motor is on a rev limiter, the motor cools down severely since a large quantity of fuel is not being burned. This valve can be wired to the transbrake circuit so that when the transbrake is set, the valve opens and keeps the motor hot, lean and mean while on the rev limiter. When the transbrake is released, the valve closes and the system goes back to full rich for the launch. Amazing improvements in 60' times can result on supercharged or naturally aspirated applications. Typically, removing 2 to 3% of the normal fuel required by the motor is a good place to start, removing up to 5% in some cases."

Is this similar to your set up?

Yes but I used what I had left over from my days of running NOS combos.

    air throttle

I ran it successfully on roots chevys. Couldn't make it work with a screw on the chevy(dropped cylinders) but i'm using it on my screw hemi.
I've heard consistency problems due to air changes but i havent seen it.
With a converter leaving at 15 psi boost air throttle or 40 psi WOT boost I can make the wheelspeed do the same thing so I don't see the point in a WOT launch.

Air throttle keeps blower belts, headers and valvetrain WAY happier.

most of the racers that's told me not to run one was mainly saying is keep it simple for less things to go wrong that way;;i put it on because this is my first blown alky injected fuel altered and was thinking would be easier on parts and help me cut better light.i wanted to use it to control my burnout rpm but after i got all installed and wired into my transbreak i relise couldn't use it for burnout rpm hooked up that way..didn't want to start over with wiring so just decided it be good as a launch controller instead.guys;;don't give me to hard time.i'm new to this..before this car i only played with street legal pro/street cars with street tires on them.didn't have the HP to need all this stuf i'm dealing with now..this theard has came out with some good information..

Imho, I would start with a basic setup until you understand the principles of the tune up, starting off with all the bells and whistles is an easy way to get lost.
