Dumb question, but exactly what is a "sprag eliminator" in a Lenco and how does it work? Can it be run with a clutch or a conerter deal? Have heard mention of the sprag eliminator a couple of times but I have no mental picture of what its all about. Thanks.

It looks like a normal sprag and cover all built into one unit, all steel. It uses face teeth very similar to what a Liberty trans uses to replace the syncros and dogs to make their clutch-less transmission. The face teeth are kept together with a conical wound spring that pushes the plates (face teeth) together. It is kind of like a ratchet that locks in on direction and then free wheels in the other. As far as I know it can be run with a clutch or a converter. I’ll see if I can get some pictures of it and I’ll post them up.

What's the horsepower limit of the sprag eliminator? Anyone ever use the air assisted sprag deal that lenco offers?

What's the air assisted sprag deal? When I talked to Lenco yesterday they said the wound conical spring above is a maintenence pain, and I asked them if they had an "air spring version" and the answer I got was NO. If the above design could be coupled with an air spring then the result might be a low maintenance bullet proof design?......

Sprag replacement module, they refer to it as a mechanical diode. Not sure about the air assist, if it helps push the mechanical diode levers out to increase holding power or if helps to quickly release them to help it instantaneous over run in the opposite direction (what happens when you shift the Lenco). Does that conical spring keep those two pieces together or apart? What kind of issues with the spring? Loss of tension, breakage, etc?

I checked into them a while back, never heard of failures.
I think they dont push selling them, make much more selling sprags

    Mechanical Diode

I have been running them for years in my TAFC. I have not had a single failure but I do change out the spring every 6 runs. The spring eventually sags and goes soft. I have had several regular sprag failures over the years complete with all the parts costs that go with that. I want no part of going back to the regular sprags. There are lots of Top Alcohol cars running them on the west coast. My greatest fear is that Lenco will stop making the springs. They make a clickety-clackity noise when you are towing the car and everybody looks at you weird, like something is broke. As for the maintenance issues- We all pull the pan every run and check the bearinngs. We pull the trans every run to change the clutch. Shouldn't you service the transmission once each racing weekend? Dave Germain

    Air assisted sprags

The air assisted sprags are used by the boat racers that run Lencos. Apparently boats and water are really hard on sprags so they went to the air assists. Ask one of the blown drag boat guys about sprags. They pioneered the double, triple and now air assisted sprags. Dave Germain

    Out of curiosity..
Whats the price difference of each sprag mentioned here?
    eg Normal HD Sprag?
    Eliminator Clip Sprag?
    Air Assist Sprag?

And the pics of Air assist looks like the Case is Different to normal case?

Those pictures are not of air assist sprags, they are a super heavy duty replacement for the normal sprags. The case is steel vice aluminum. As far as the prices go, the current prices for the sprag races are $90 for the inner and $132 for the outer. The races are all the same for the standard sprag ($110), the strips and clips sprag ($205) and the Helicopter sprag ($365). The sprag eliminators are $1200 each and the springs for them are $30 each. Hope that helps.
