Powerglide puking

been running this glide for about 2 months, made 15-20 passes and everything was ok, now for the past 8 passes regardless weather its hot or cool the transmission wants to push fluid out the vent every pass, didnt do it before. what the hell caused this change all of a sudden, also the brake has become very slow to react. its a 14-71 blown 540bbc 3000 lb car.

With limited info I would take a shot at the converter. Converter can go bad and create more heat than it can get rid of. If stall on hit is higher might have a slower reaction. Any metal in the fluid?.

 

Powerglide Puke cure

I've had this several times over the years, I'd check the pump bolts are still tight & that the pump gasket is still intact. The high pressure cooler port is adjacent to the vent & the HP oil can pass between the 2 ports. A dead sprag will also generate a lot of heat quickly which will exhaust quickly carrying fluid with it but my first guess would be loose or stripped pump bolts.

 

If your converter sprag fails (locks up) you will not notice the difference at stage and launch. It's like a spragless, If it fails and spins freely in both direction your stall will be roughly half of normal. Is your brake slow to apply or release?

 

had converter check, OK. brake very slow to react, converter is spragless by the way. pump bolts tight, I guess time for trans to be gone through. man I hate this. did everything possible to take care of it. shoulda laste longer than it did. now im afraid to pour any power to it. we had our tune up really soft. oh yeah, no metal in fluid.

 

What kind of fluid are you using. Is the trans slipping or act strange in any way?

May have internal leak, gasket or seal. High pressure leak will aerate and foam the fluid causing it to be overfull and puke out the vent also lower line pressure causing slow brake apply. You could check your pressure on the reverse piston or the low apply piston.

 

look up Cameron Bradham at Torque Converter Services in Columbia S.C. He builds my trans, they last very well and build almost no heat without a cooler. I run in the 3.70's in the heat and have run as quick as 3.71 in the 1/8th. With a glide at this level of performance you just have to look at it more often, but it has alot of things going for it over other types of trans... including Lenco types.

 

in the valve body is your pressure valve stuck??Dave

 

I am using tci trans fluid, I was informed it has kevlar band but not kevlar clutches, what are your opinions on this ? goin back to my trans guy to have looked at. any suggestions are appreciated. thanks.

 

I run the same fluid...no problems.
