How do you guys keep your frames from rusting ?

ive tried many things, & the corrosion x is working the best but is there some sort of blue ing or a etching treatment ? some of the frames I see have a dark stained color that looks like it would hold up better than what I'm doing now... thanks in advance

 

scotch brite and motor oil seems to work the best
scuff it clean
wash it with solvent then give it a thin coat of oil

 

Wipe it down with WD-40 after every race and it will stay rust free. Have had the same car since 1999 and no rust.

 

I started using Gibbs oil on all my non painted stuff, seems to work really well. Doesn't leave an oily residue, the stuff is amazing.

Just discovered Gibb's this year...GREAT stuff! Have used Marvel Mystery oil up to that . Also, if you leave the mill coat on the tubing and simply "keep-up" on the oiling...it will last much longer than if is is "skotch-brite clean" ....but well scuffed chassis can look real nice when oiled nicely...just takes more time....and I don't have that much extra time!

Does it attract dust, dirt, etc?

 

anything with a oil base will attract dust to a point i have never see any dust to speak off but i keepy frame always wiped off ..Dave

 

Anybody ever sand steel (like a frame, cage, etc) to a chrome look and use these oiling methods to keep them from rusting?

Once I built a set of zoomie headers and the chrome shop told me to sand it step by step using finer and finer grits as this would help the real chrome look better. I did what they said going all the way to 1200 grit. They dang near looked chrome before they went to the chrome shop! I was considering doing this to our roll cage, except I would not have it chromed for real, just use these oiling methods you guys talk about.

 

I took some clear urethane paint and mixed it with lacquer thinner to the consistency almost of water and applied with a lint free rag. Has not rusted in 3 years.

Have you tried wielding on a chassis after it has been coated with Gibbs oil? Do you just need to clean it with break clean well, or do you need to do anything else to prep it?

 

Where are you guys buying your Gibbs at?

even bought a bunch of the worthless boesheild t-9 that was raved about and could almost see it rust as fast as i put it on
Is this gibbs oil better than plain synthetic motor oil?

Hey John, I hear ya...have some 10yr old bottles of that crap on the shelf...YES, I think it actually MADE it rust??!! I bought the Gibbs from a Dealer on the east side of MI...I will have to get that info...pretty happy with the stuff and yes, welds easy afterwards! Maybe Google for Dealers??
