Hey Im trying these total seal m2 gapless top rings for the first time they are 3/16 with a side gas ported piston blown procharger on gas, I'm getting mixed reviews on the whole honing process and break in procedure some guys have luck with ring seal and some don't. I have heard of some engines with a full bore and hone work ok and some that after a puff hone only fail, cylinders not sealing lots of blowby. How are m2 rings for you Promod guys working out

Never use them. They show impressive leak down values but I have never seen them work going down the track.

We spent a lot of time on these and never saw any positive results. Nothing really bad, just no improvements. I thought we might see something like less fuel in the oil, but didn't seem to change.

Hey Stan. I've always been curious about them too. Have never run them but Keith @ TS keeps saying I should. When you ran your tests, what sort of 2nd ring gap did you run and did you open it up any wider than normal for a second? Were you equipped with crank case pressure senors at the time? Any difference there? Thanks for sharing your results. I've often "wondered" but if you found nothing to be gained then that's good enough for me.

We never did anything really "scientific" but used several combinations and just never saw anything that clearly was better. No big changes in crankcase pressure. I really believe the old way is still as good as any, use a SP H479 dykes top at .028", cast scraper at .028" and standard tension Hastings oil rings (the gold ones). We are at fairly low boost and things might change at higher levels.

Thanks for the reply, I thought it would be the case where no gains were made. I too was talked into it, my last engine I had a dyke top and a gapless 2nd and that did not work it fluttered the top and my crankcase pressure when up so i put a napier 2nd opened the gap wider than the top and found less crankcase pressure at the same boost level with no fluttter marks on the dyke. Maybe the gains are in retaining ring tention after so many passes

What do "flutter" marks look like?

When I was working out the tune up on my Blown gas (ProCharger) non-intercooled engine with 40 psi boost. I went through a lot of pistons and rings. At times I was running different rings on each side of the motor to see what would work best.

I finally settled on the Conventional Total Seal .017 dyke AP steel top ring. Napier sec ring and a 25 lb oil ring. Top and sec ring with same gap.

This combination has really proved itself for me and I've stuck with it.

I flogged the zero gap stuff about 15 years ago and found no power or benefit.

    Blessings...........Ron Clevenger

thanks Ron I think im going back to the dyke stuff I dont want to experiment anymore Flutter would be chattering wave like markings on bore side of the ring sometimes you would need a magnifying glass and a sharp eye to see it Carol Carter showed me one time
