Broke tranny last weekend. Tried to start engine just to make sure it was ok. Engine kicks back like timing is too high. Timing is at 25 degrees. Anybody ever had this issue?

    Motor

I don't think motor is hurt. Pulled plugs and everything looks good. Ran valves and everything is good. Motor turns over fine by hand. I've never tried to start a blower motor without a transmission behind it. Motor will start then die and kickback on the blower starter. Friend of mine said they need a load (trans) behind them.

    Starting Procedure

Squirt alky into hat. Engage Blower starter. Let spin for a
Second or two then pull kill switch back and it usually starts right up. Now with no transmission behind it, it starts then dies and kicks back on the blower starter.

Would just seam to me that with out the rotational mass on the rear of the crank it cant carry its self pass the compression cycle. The blower on the other end of the crank is working like a compression brake

I've started my blown SBC plenty of times without the tranny, just play it easy on when throttling the motor, it'll rev up much faster.

Not sure what type of tranny you're running but if it's uses a clutch, the motor doesn't see the tranny when clutch is engaged.

Sounds to me like you hurt the motor.

    Money Shot,
Have you checked your timing? I'm sure you did, but I want to cover all the bases. When a motor unloads or stops fast like that it can effect your timing especially if you are using a mag. Joe

    Timing

Yep, double checked timing. I suppose I should clarify this is a 500ci KB Veney Hemi making 42lbs of boost @28od with a Mag44 ignition.

    pump

make sure it didn't shear the pump drive shaft. maybe it's dying when it runs out of prime. i have never heard of a blower motor needing a transmission to run.

if you have a 8973 or grid hooked to it, have you tried to start it straight off the mag just to make sure it's not some sort of wiring deal?

    Keyway

Have not checked keyway. If keyway was stripped though wouldn't the timing be off?

Pulled belt off and turned blower by hand. Turns fine. Thought the same thing myself.
