Hi all, I am installing an SSI hi helix 10-71 on a BB Chevy running conventional heads and a BDS manifold. Should I be looking at relocating the blower so the delta opening is physically in the middle of the manifold? If so it means the centre strengthning casting will have to be cut out from the manifold as it will screw up the air flow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

107 views and no replies.....OK my take on this is sell the BDS and buy an Indy or similar.

The Indy doesn't have the centre piece in it but not sure on the design of the BDS as to if you could machine out the centre strap.

Plus the Indy design will give you better power anyway.

    Delta Outlet

Ok, 107 views and only one reply. Good advise, too, BUT if you just don't want to buy a different manifold, you could probably still use the one you have with the center divider. You might just leave it in place and machine (with a grinder) a knife edge on it with the sharp edge being toward the back of the engine and let the divider act as a diverter to help distribute some of the air towards the back of the intake. (it seems the hi-helix still pushes the air forward as it exits).
Just my two cents worth. Keep the change.

thanks guys, we are a husband and wife team trying to run with no sponsorship so swapping the manifold is not an option ! I will look at modifying it as suggested and hopefully equalise the temps with the port nozzles. Happy racing all

Totally understand that, money is tight everywhere. If you machine it out just be sure to check it's strong enough, thinking about it if the Indy doesn't have it then you may be ok. Would be worth calling BDS direct and asking.

To move it back you will be using a adapter plate to fill in the front of the stock opening in the manifold. The adapter plate will hold/stenghthen the manifold. So cut it out! :D I would use at least a 3/8" plate.

    more opinions please

just wanted to bump this to the top as I have the same issue with a littlefield intake on BBC. My intended set back will put this intake bar almost in the center of blower pie opening.

Does this matter. Like the above...just a bracket car.

    thanks

    center my outlet

I asked bob miner about this for my engine, and he said the setback was more of a fuel thing to get the distribution correct, and 90 percent of the alky motors wouldn't benefit from this. maybe in a all out deal, but for the added cost of the snout, plate, supports, etc, it just isn't worth the extra effort to do. my2 cents from 3 cents.dan

I ran a conventional head BBC with a BDS intake and SSI 14/71 with only a couple of inches of setback and really had no issues getting the tune worked out. When I bought the motor, it had a Littlefeild HH8/71 with the same setback, no issues there either. I ran 8 in the top and 8 ports and it only took a couple of outings to clean up the tune after the system was flowed. The center brace was never touched. Hope this helps

    7" snout

Should have mentioned blower came with 7" snout and just trying to use it for economical reasons instead of switching snouts. Even if I only moved back the standard 2 1/4" littlefield set back plate the intake bar will still be in the delta opening.

    Thansl for tips?

We probably have 5 or 6 intakes with that bar cut out. Back about 15 years ago we ran state of the art davenport modded HH 14 on a bbc with that bar cut out without troubles, but we used .750" thick adaptor plates so maybe that saved us? I'd cut it out & use an adaptor/set back plate.
