I'm finally going to get back going on my new BBC for my altered and have changed my build a little. Originally I was going to run the GM "Pontiac" heads it came with but have decided not to due to them being water castings and getting a blower manifold to fit will be a pain. So here is what I'm thinking.....

    -Donovan D500 solid aluminum 10.2 block,billet splayed caps,standard cam location+ size
-Callies 4.250" crank, std main and rod sizes
    -JE pistons,4.500",1.035" pin,
    - rings??
    -GRP rods,1.094" hemi pin, length?
    -Pins??
    -Moroso billet gearotor oil pump
-Jeff Johnson Billet Fab split pan,3qrt accumulator
    -ISKY Red Zone .904" lifters
    -Cam?
-AJPE conventional billet BBC heads,Alky CNC port program,2.350" x 1.88,ti valves and retainers,Nextek springs,350lbs@2.100",fully prepped by AJPE
    -T&D shaft rockers
    -Indy blower manifold
    -14-71 Littlefield,k-8 rotors,Davenport mods
    -S&K injector,K valve,setup and flowed by Davenport
-MSD Pro Mag,20 amp conversion by BR Motorsports
    -MSD oil pump drive
-Donovan gear drive,Pioneer front mag drive
    -crank support

    What do you guys think?
Would like to make around 1800-2000hp

    Going into 2000lb altered/TAFC chassis,Top dragster/match race,2 speed

    BBC specs

Hi ! I think you are getting well prepared for this. We enjoy BBC racing and are the current European record hoders in comp AA/D. 6.51 with a 397 CID blown alky. (4.25 x 3.50) Our motor contains a lot of the same parts you are listing. To your spec sheet:
    - The block will be your weakest part. Upgrade to CN billet if you can afford.
    - I really like the Childs & Albert Zerogap, but they are out of business. We bought 10 sets to have for ourselves. Akerly & Childs will sell you a good dykes top ring set.
    - Look at the Titan oil pump. We have no oiling problems at all.
    - We are very happy with the Isky needleless lifters. Liked the Schubeck RollerX even better but he is also out of business.
    - I would buy a cam from Jeff Fowler. He provided our Bullet cam with his specs.
    - The AJPE heads are just as good as it gets. www.racecarparts.com for nice price. (Say hi to Brendan from me)
    - RCD front crank support is a must.
    - Manton pusrods. Perfect products, quick delivery, good people.

Have fun. All the best from Norway.

Thanks for the info!! Yes we like running BBC's also. We've ran a 470ci with a cast iron bowtie block and Dart 360's for the last 5 seasons. Our best pass in the altered has been a 6.58@215mph weighing 2065lbs with me in it. That was with 34 in the mag,35psi boost and a 2 speed glide. No bearing or engine problems in 5 seasons even with me revving the shit out of it in the burnout.

    BBC Build

It all sounds good. I would use a New Century block with cross drilled Mains. Chevy size mains The crank would have Hemi Rod size pins. Titan oil pump. and .904 lifters. The rest sounds Great! Don

As far as rings I noticed you put ???. Your combo is virtually the same as mine and I went with the Ackerly and Childs HTD rings .017 Dykes top and the 1/16HTD second with a standard oil ring.

Just phone up Ray, they were just making up a box set for that combo when I ordered mine so it will be easy.

Plus make sure you get a pin that is a min of .200 wall straight (no taper stuff), I went with the 1.094 OD x .250 wall pins. I was tired of bending pins.

x2 on the Manton pushrods, at least 7/16", 1/2" if you can fit them, with the billet heads you should be able to. At least on the exhaust side. You may have to grind the pinch a bit but they will be bullet proof.

Sounds like a great build, I envy you a bit, I had to settle for a cast iron block, I would have loved a New Century but had to spend the money else where.

I run the same ring setup right now but they are Total Seal and have had great luck with them. Yes no taper wall pins in any blown alcohol motor of mine. Manton taper wall pushrods are what I'm planning for my new motor.

I was talking to Fowler Engines and they highly recommend the Dart 410 in solids for my application over the billet AJPE heads due to the cost and I wouldn't be taking them out of there ability for the most part. He said my block would be the weak link not the solid cast heads.

IMO If you want a solid cast head I would contact Curtis @ RFD he did a set for me (Dart solids) and they actually flow considerably better than the 410 head. The came in at right around 361CC and flow will into the 450 range. From what he tells me this is a moderate program and he has a couple others that can get a bunch more flow out. Plus he puts in all the good parts and makes a race ready deal right off the hop. He just gets a raw casting and runs it through the 5 axis machine for the specs of your engine.

    Just a thought

I've talked to Curtis in the past and considered his billet heads but they are a bit too much $$$ for me. I'll give him a ring again and check into his Dart 360 program. Lonnie Houde recommended the BMF 385 or 405 in a solid so I might check into those further also.

Fair enough,I have never really seen the merits of a billet head in bbc a cast head is perfectly fine imo. I chose the RFD head because i felt it was the best deal, but obviously.you will use the head you feel is the best for your deal. i would be curious to know which you choose when you do decide.

I do agree that the billets are overkill for my combo now but if I want to step it up later they will take anything I will throw at them. A buddy of mine runs a blown alky BBC with solid Big Dukes and makes 2700hp with a M4 14-71 and he's finding he has to cycle his heads because they seem to go soft after repeated beatings. That won't be a problem with billets I don't think

With the modest program they flow 455cfm on the intake and 315cfm on the exhaust. A Big Duke or Big Chief will make more flow for sure but these should make good power for me.

My cast heads would no longer torque up on the studs beside the exhaust port, they were six seasons old but being from Canada we don't get all that many passes per season. I went with AJPE billet heads, they are more money but I was going for long term dependablitiy.

Thats what I'm thinking also. They don't flow quite as good as some of the other conventional heads but their strength makes up for it. What did you run for cast heads before the AJPE? Do you run in Ashcroft Steve?

The heads were made by eddelbrock and were water heads, live and learn.
Yes, I do run at Ashcroft and Mission in the Northwest Outlaws, 7.0 and quciker bracket racing.

You and Neil Lachelt are both running the AJPE heads with good luck? Neil makes big power with them by his runs I've seen.

I was hoping to run with you guys last year but none of the races lined up on my days off. I ran in Ashcroft last year at the Loafers event but that was it.

I've been racing against Neil for the last ten years or so. He does run his stuff hard, his heads have survived more than a few total short block destructions. Heads look a lttle beat up but still work great, very strong.

Hope to see you out this year.

    Summit Northwest Outlaws 2012

    May 5-6 Mission
    June 8-10 Ashcroft
    June 29-July 1 Ashcroft (25 Aniversary Race)
    Sept 15-16 Mission

Trying to add one more date in Mission.
