I saw on an older post mention of a go-nogo gauge for checking condition of Alum rods. I assume this is for checking condition of the threads in the rodbolt holes. I could also see checking on a regular bassis measuring roundness of the big end bore. How often domost people pull the rods and check them, how many times can they be disassembled before the actual act of assembly and disassembly causes a problem. This next set of rods I want to stay on top of, want to catch a prob before it happens. Where can I get these go-nogo gauges? Need to get a real education on Alum rods, been using them for many years and only broke two but sure it was just luck.

I don't think you can undo rods too many times in the lifespan we are talking about. If it is a blown application then it varies from 15 to 25 runs per set of rods and the owner's requirements. I bought my go-no-go from Childs and Alberts years ago. Just as a warning some brand rods will let that gauge screw in more than others so it varies a little from brand to brand. So you need to get one and try out out on a new rod first to see what is a GO. One thing I find important is a rod bolt stretch gauge because the amount of torque required for the correct amount of bolt stretch varies based on how many times it has been tightened and loosened. According to Brian at GRP it is good to map out the required torque values required for .006" stretch over the life of the rod one time then you will know what to torque them at depending on the amount of runs. This only has to be done on one rod and recorded.

Thanks Mike for the reply. Since C&A is no longer, who else should I contact to get the go-nogo gauge?

I think if you check the straightness of the rod bolts on a set of rods out of a screw blown motor with 15-20 runs on them you will find some bent.

    stretch

I usually get cussed, but I make my bottom end guys stretch every bolt when time permits. While most of the time it's fairly uniform, sometimes there are a few oddballs.
