In an effort to preheat oil in our wet sump systems, we have ruined 4 of these http://www.race-mart.com/items/products/moroso-performance/MOR23996-detail.htm and so its no surprise that I'm looking to use something else. (1 was my fault)

I am leaning towards something like this http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Dry-Sump-Preheater,580.html (its a little fishy that it will heat up oil faster with less watts:confused:) but will it scorch the oil as you're led to beleive in other ads?

    What have you used successfully?

    Possibilities are http://www.jegs.com/i/Stefs/861/6770/10002/-1?parentProductId=745617 and http://www.jegs.com/i/Moroso/710/23991/10002/-1

This looks just like whats in our dry sump tank and it works great, never cooks the oil but it will boil the water and alcohol out. Been using it for 4 years without problem, the only thing I dont really like is we have to tie up the cord every pass so its not dragging the ground, if it had a detachable cord it would be better for us.

    Oil Heater

We used to use the pad style but could never get them to stay where you put them.
Switched to the Moroso element style heater and never looked back. Only thing you have to watch is not to bend the prongs on the element when moving the engine in and out. Guess you could thread it in once everything is in. Never burns the oil.

The Stefs heater from Jegs is the BEST. Dosen't burn or over heat the oil and is indestructable. Fits well inside the diaper. Just make sure you have room for the heater with the pan on before you drill the hole and weld in the bung.

The speedway [moroso] element is 212 watt, the Stefs element is 500 watt. I've used both in drysump tanks. The Stefs element never lasted for me, went thru several under warranty, shorted out and would shock you. Finally went with the Moroso and it's lasted several years. But being 212 watts compared to 500 watts, it is slow! The Moroso won't overheat oil, the Stefs will scorch oil if left unattended.

Been using oilpreheaters for 2 years on our pulling tractor in wet sump oil pans. Always had the idea that I didn't get the temp of the oil the same in the whole pan. This year decided not to use them anymore because our outside temp is never below 60 deg-f.

Done this the whole season and never had any problems.

Which way do you always start your engines? We are starting them all at 400 rpm's.

Another vote for Stefs. I run one on the drag boat. I had 1 failure since 99.
Actually was this year, so the first one lasted 10 years. Not to bad.

Although I haven't found it back, I thought the Moroso 5x7 stick on pad style had a built in temperature peak of 160°.

It does put some heat into the rest of the motor.

this will be my first year with a heater. I had Olson set it up for the Moroso. My concern is how long is too long leaving the heater connected?
Until now I have always run an Accusump primarily to prelube

If your using a oil preheater like the Moroso #23980 which is 212 watts, it will not scorch the oil period.

"These heater elements are designed specifically for heating oil and will not scorch or boil the oil like converted water heater style oil preheaters. 212 watts of power raises temperature of 12-quarts of oil to 60°F in about 30 minutes. It has a 120 volt rating and includes a detachable, 7ft cord. The heating element is 4-1/2'' long tip to tip."

I accidently tested this earlier this year when I left the heater plugged in over night while working in the shop. It was plugged in probably 24 hrs before I noticed it. Oil was throughly warmed for sure but no ill effects.
This was with about 12 quarts of oil in a Olson pan (Redline Racing Synthetic).

    Blessings..............Ron Clevenger

I have used Moroso heaters for years.......its a must do.......OIL HAS TO BE WARM , before anything else. Its the life blood of the motor , a good athalete warms up first , so should your motor with warm oil. Just my humble opinion
