    Hi everyone.

Does anyone know if the major piston manufacturers can replicate existing pistons?

We currently run a set of domed alky pistons which we were given no batch number or ID to at all. All we do know about them is that with our rod length, we get ample piston to valve clearance and they work really well with our combination.

They are getting old now and we really could do with a new set of these EXACT pistons. We don't really want to have to get a different set of pistons and then new rods to go with it because we can't get the same. I'm hoping we can send a piston off to a manufacturer and they can scan it or similar and replicate a new set for me.

If anyone has had this done before and know whether or not this can be done that would be great.

    Thanks alot

We have had good luck with Venolia, keep the order number handy or if you loose it like we did, they had to dig out our paper work and find it.Had to buy a minimum of 4 but at least we did not get taken to the cleaners and have a couple of spares and pretty decent turn around time.

    arias who?

i called arias to get some new pistons for a motor i bought. they had the numbers on the bottom that tells them everything about it. they would NOT under any circumstances sell me new pistons! i offered a sample of the many used ones i had, and they said even though i had it, they would NOT make me new ones because someone else had done it first. they would not budge a bit on this. they would not tell me who had the original design,so i could get them to sign a release, and even if i had one they still wouldnt do it!!!!!!! figure that out?

I had ross do the same once, refuse
    J&E will do it also
When Ed was there he was great to deal with
i think he now works for CP
so i am sure that would be another outlet

I assume some piston manufacturers won't replicate other companies pistons through fear of design copyrights?

I believe the pistons I need replicated are either Arias or JE Pistons, so I'll just get in contact with either of those two and hope they can replicate their own designs.

    Thanks guys

Whoever you have make your new pistons BE SURE TO CHECK PISTON TO VAVLE..we sent a piston to venolia and didn't get them back till 2 days before the race.. needless to say we didn't check piston to valve and it BIT US IN THE ASS... BLEW THE INTAKE INTO 9PEICES, took out racpak dash, broke gear drive, list goes on & on we "ASSUMED" since we sent them a piston to duplicate that's we would get back..KEY WORD "ASSUMED"..piston dome was not the same as what we sent them.. so definitely check after you get yours back

Not sure about the USA but in Australia (and we share copyright protection laws) parts for automotive repairs are not subject to copyright if used to repair a complete unit. You can not make them to make a complete unit.

    IE,

Say you had a company called Lowcomp you could copy all the parts you want but you cant sell a complete engine.

just what I read during my masters degree law subject. free advice so not worth the ink used in typing this post.

Unless it's been milled out, the underside will tell you who's piston it is, whether it's JE, Arias, Ross, CP or whoever.

You must run a Newberry motor. Ross made them for C&A when they were still open.

Wow, after all that carnage, how do you know you didn't have enough V to P?

Joe; ring Dave Powell at Performance Unlimited and send him a piston.

Using his digitizer and Solidworks he'll replicate the piston and can get them made by CP or JE

I think it's less about copyright and more about exclusive agreements and not stepping on each other's toes. "I'll give you this piston design to make for me, but make it only for me and I'll guarantee x amount of units per year" and most companies will follow through on their end until you quit living up to your end of the bargain or do something that makes the supplier look like crap.

From there, the company doesn't want the liability of possibly screwing up the photo copied part or to invest the time in engineering and programming in a potentially low volume part.

Dave's a good guy. I used to deal with him when I was at JE. Next time you see him, tell him Tony from JE said hi.

Will do Tony, I used to work for Dave - taught me so much, when did you work for JE? I did the piston digitization June 2008-2009.

I worked there from 1998 to 2006. Iain Graham set him up as a JE distributor.
