Ok, we can't keep tachs alive for too long in our car, vibration/tyre shake just kills them over time.

Who sells mechanical tachs? And can we use it with our exsisting setup?

    Where are they driven from?

    Thanks

A mechanical tach shoudnt be hard to find, Probably Jegs or Summit.
They run off of the mag. Dont see why you couldnt use it.

    Tel-Tac II

Not mechanical but we've had good luck with the Tel-Tac tachometers.

I see quite a few guys doing this with MSD 44's but is anyone doing it succesfully with Mallorys?

    Also, do they have playback?

They work with mags or distributors so should work with the Mallory.
They do have one that plays back 4 lowest and 4 highest rpms. Probably more helpful for guys that go in circles.:D

    Mechanical Tach

I have been running a Moroso Mechanic 12,000 rpm tach for 7 years with no problems. I drive mine off of the fuel pump extension. One less electrical componet to worry about.

    Greg,
I would be interested to see how or what you used to drive the cable. Pics would be a bonus.

On our BBC's we attach to the bottom side of the offset mag drive directly below the mag.

On our front mag drive it uses a stock distributor drive and has the stock tach drive built right in it.

    SoDak,
Was that something already built into the offset drive by the mfg or something you modified. Pics?

    Dave & Relentless,

I will see if I can get a picture up in the next day or two. Sitko Mag drives have the option for a Mechanical Tach off the bottom of the mag drive also.

A friend of ours built these I think he started by stealing stock tach drive parts and machined them to attach to the cogged pulley shaft that is directly below the mag. I won't be able to get pics and back to the internet until monday if you still want to see?

Ours is also a Pioneer/Dave Archer front drive. We just use a stock distributor drive that already has the tach drive built into it.

Schulze Manufacturing in Waterbury, Ct. has exactly what you need and will design a Jones mechanical tach for an alcohol car.
They are and have been the exclusive source for the Jones tach.
