44 mag hooked up direct to points box , no crank trigger , 6 shooter etc.
    Set timming to 30 degrees.

What can make the timing retard when you check it , running car on jack stands in the pits.Rev up and timming can retard up to 5 degrees.

No cam end float ,dunn drive, billet base with one piece shaft etc.

Only thing I have changed is gone from super mag to the 44.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Greg.

I'm generally a fan of Snap-On tools but if the timing light you're using has an adjustable advance feature built into it I'd be getting a new timing light. I have seen that style of light do some weird things on mags or even on other high performance ignitions. We went to just a basic timing light with no features and haven't had another problem. I still have & use the Snap-On light with the adjustable advance and love it for use on general automotive applications but I don't use it on race cars anymore.

We were told to use the cheapest timing light we could buy. No adjustment, just the light...

My Snap On light jumps all over the place and back and forth between tach and adv/ret setting. We tried a cheap old light i had laying around...works great.

    Greg...

You might want to check the key that locks the cross-drive on the bottom of your mag. These can shear if the groove is deformed/worn and that causes the cross-drive to slip on the mag axle and thus the timing changes. Had this happen on one of the mags on the Fueler, was hell until we found it...

    Might be worth checking...

    44 mag

I use a Snap-On mt2261 timing light with no problems at all. Although I have had a lot of people say they use the most basic light they can find.

Using the adv, function is very useful on the Snap-On light

    Thanks Dennis
Had a look tonight and yes it is rocking. Not sheared but worn in the cross drive.
I guess that key is special to MSD?
