has anybody actually gained performance by adding a crank trigger with there MSD mag ?
I know all the hype about it being more accurate and all but... How much faster did anybody actually go other than the weight loss from there wallet ?

That all depends on how unstable your timing is without a cranktrigger. If it is moving around 1-2 or more degrees because of mag drive wear or front gear wear then yes you will gain power with a crank trigger. If everything is tight and the timing does not move around while going down the track then no you will not gain anything. Most every timing mark that I have seen that is not on a crank trigger moves around when the rpm changes and that causes power loss.

    Timing

Crank trigger is faster because you can push the timing a little harder. There are mag drives that are better than others, but there isn't a mag drive out there that is consistent as a trigger.

I used to be scared of the triggers until we watched a timing trace on the racepak of the timing on the mag drive. It was all over the place! We had a trigger on the car next race.

This was a PSI drive, double throwdown beefed up shaft, fresh gear, no endplay on the cam, etc.

I worked for a team that originally ran a trigger, had one go bad and lost a run, so they instructed me they didn't want to run a trigger anymore, despite my recommendations otherwise. We had to run every bit of half a degree less off the drive.

All of that said, I've been fast with and without. I think the fast runs without would have been faster on the trigger, but that's just my thoughts.

I would also recommend a Leahy trigger rather than a MSD trigger. You don't see alot of Top Alcohol or Pro Mod teams running the MSD trigger, and I heard stories of people hurting some parts on MSD triggers.

That's an interesting statement. There is obviously a difference in design between the two, although I was under the impression all the pickups are the same, so how different could they be? Has anyone had a close look?
