I remember hearing them tested once a month when I was a kid. Supposedly there is still one on it's perch in La Canada Flintridge, CA.

WE had those drills in the sixth grade. Some time we walked home and the best was when we got on our hand and knees under the desks.

If you were sneeky enough you could look up the girls dresses, I'VE HEARD!!!:p

That's awesome Randy ... great find.

Unfortunately, I remember those air raid drills in grade school too. Living in Albuquerque we kids always felt like it could be for real. The mountain that borders the city to the south east of us was full of bombs. I still think it is.

    Damn I am getting old...

This is the same siren that I grew up listening to during it's weekly Saturday test. It was in downtown Miami on a dedicated pedestal (about four stories high), and I lived about 9 miles from it. It sounded as if it were only a few blocks away. Running it up indoors is something that I don't believe that Big will do again. Chase

Wow, thanks for sharing the link with us Randy. As a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s we didnt have to do the under the desk drills like some of you did but I do remember the sirens wailing early in the morning the first Saturday every month.

We did the "DROP" when I was in elementary school in the 1960's. Being a big guy I had a hard time getting under those little desks. Kinda reminds me of when I used to squeeze my fat a## in my TA/FC.

That's the coolest thing I've seen in a while!
That Garlits has got some cool toys!

And while I'm not "that old"
I too remember getting to crawl under my desk as a little kid
but dang it, I wasn't "advanced" enough to have a clue
about where to be looking while crouched there under the desk
probably was too busy thinking about lunch or recess or....

    Probably the closest thing nowadays:
Here in SLO county there are sirens all over the area
for the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.
And even though they put the word out way before doing any test
I gotta admit it has caught me off guard once or twice..
it's a pretty erie feeling for a moment or two till the ol' light bulb comes on....
