Is it possible to paint magnesium with a base coat/clear coat with a coat of self etching primer?
This area is brutal on mag. White powdery spots overnight. Even the dow coated hat gets the spots. Tried powdercoating a few years ago and it doesn't seem to stick well.
Are there any issues that you know of by doing this? Are the spots still going to bust thru?
    Thanks for any help..

    moisture

The problem here on the gulf coast is moisture, so comparing to someone out west where it's really dry isn't apples to apples.

About the only thing that really protects mag is the Dow7 coating.

I think there is some sort of sealant needed to be sprayed on first, or the paint will spider web real bad once the moisture gets in the mag, so you have the same problem. I've seen it happen to cheap paint jobs on new mag bodies on dragsters.

I have seen afew in the past that had been coated by polydyne they looked great and had no issues with them in the texas city area right here on the water. One set were done in teflon and were trick and easy to clean.

    Hi Screwed:

Say I will keep this brief as possible but having dealt with Mag in past I can offer this.
If you are going to paint it you have to Conversion coat the surface or your wasting your time.

    http://www.henkelna.com/cps/rde/xch...tredDotUID=productfinder&redDotUID=0000000J4V

Alodine was consumed by this company. Good reading material here.

\Also if you want to dive deep into Mag.......

Like anything else Surface prep will determine how well your finish ends up.
In closing . You must make sure the proper chemicals and procedures are followed to the letter. Compatible materials. Dive into the Mill specs (just Google).

Alternatively you could use a dry graphite spray on the surface. Nice thing about this is that you can wipe it off with a solvent and redo anytime..

    Good luck

I live 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and I sand/mud race. So they are wet all the time. Both of the intakes I have are powder coated and I don't have any problems. One of them was powder coated by a friend with one of those home powder coat kits and heated in a household oven.

Will; there are two places on this planet with not just moisture, but a petrochemical/ salt air condition, that's Houston and Brisbane, Qld. that are the worst area's for mag bodies.
Even a "deep soak" in Dow 7 will not live in those environments. Johnny B called me 4 weeks after painting Urs's car cause it was growing potatos under the paint. I've found that no matter how long it's in the Dow tank, you can not have the underside open to the air. Mag is so porous, the air travels through the mag, but can't pass the paint, so it starts bubbling trying to get out. The only thing you can do is paint the inside, or spray it with liquid furniture wax (Pledge).
