    Hi guys.

I know I'll get a fair selection of opinions and ideas about who's used what, but after a general consensus of good crankshaft manufacturers for standard stroke billet blown alcohol crankshafts.

I've heard of Bryant, KB and Velasco, but are there any other names that stand out as a decent investment? After doing some research I've found Ohio Crankshafts, and they seem to have a really good price on blown alcohol billet crankshafts, and from the looks of it a few Pro Mod guys use their products, are they a good brand?

Also wanted to use this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me throughout the year on here sorting my MSD 44 problems; turned out it was a dodgy points box! First run with a borrowed points box straight back into the 6.8's. Now we can finally work during the off season on other aspects to get the car going even faster!

    Thanks again!
    Joe

    Winberg

I've been real happy with Winberg, well before they started advertising here. They are as good, if not better than the Bryants.

Ohio seems to be nice people but think real hard about your investment! From what I understand Ohio's are Asian blanks then ground here. I know there only $1500 bucks but if it lets go you can at a minumum add a zero! We run Bryant with absolutly no issues in our TAD, true their twice as much but its a better investment, put it in run it as long as it mags ok when your done you'll probably be able to sell it for $1500 and keep the oil in your motor not in your diaper!! In reality kind of makes them about the same price!?! I think I would buy a used Bryant or Winberg before I would buy a new import.

Ordered a new shaft from Ohio in 08 and had a rod failed after 3 passes. Sent it back to them to get the 1 journal fixed. Never checked when it was sent back, nothing on the invoice, nothing on the crank except 1 white mark. Needed it this year and went to put it in use and was 10/10 to my dismay. It has been a while since I had to send a crank to the lower 48 to get fixed and thought that 1 rod journal could be fixed without the whole thing being turned? They said that this is standard practice, am I just a out of touch hick from Alaska?

I agree with Kent ^ ! Remember the old saying- "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ! " Personally I have run Bryants and Velascos with no issues!

From the sounds of it I best stay with the big names, purely for peace of mind. We currently run a Bryant crank but it's very tired now and quite simply needs replacing. Will see whats available and get one of the big names! :D

    Thanks guys!

    Harrisracing,
Nope, they did the right..and only thing they could.

When you burn a rod the crank bends. They straighten it back as close to zero as they can get but there is always a little "off" in the main alignment so they grind the mains.
The rods may not have been perfect in stroke position so that combined with the bad journal that needed ground dictated that the rod journals be ground also. There is also the advantage of having the balance, though now slightly lighter on the rod journal side, even throughout the crank.

Last spring we bought our 2nd Ohio billet crank.

We've run Crower, BRC and there was one more but I can't quite remember the name.

We have been real happy with Ohio. We ordered on a friday with an extra key, bigger flange bolt holes and balanced to our bobweights. They shipped it on tuesday without any expiditing charges.

The fact is that you can break any of them. And if the unfortunate happens and a crank fails, the failure never starts as a catastrophic explosion. They start with little cracks and we try to "listen" to the motor. For us when bolts start coming loose likely the crank is cracked and vibrating. Also we put about 20-25 runs on and then check them for cracks.

    Question?????

I run both Bryant and Velasco crankshafts. They both are great pieces. These are billet crankshafts. Common knowdlege is that a forging has better grain structure and should be stronger. Why are the Bryant and Velasco cranks better say than a 4130 forged crank like the Ohio? Is it because of the material used in the Bryant and Velasco? Ive never tried the Ohio but have to admit the price is tempting. They use them in the promods etc. and I have never heard anyone having trouble.
I know one thing and that is you can break anything. You don't have to look very far to kow that.
How much HP does a good running promod make?

On a thread about cranks a few months ago, somebody said the quickest nostalgia funny car runs an Ohio crankshaft. I don't personally know him or have anything to do with the crank company, but if he can run low 5.70's with one i'm sure it's plenty strong. Just my .02

That same nostalgia guy took them out of all of their motors, and replaced them with Velasco billets.

I have only seen one OHIO hemi crank when they first came out. It came in a used motor and was only supposed to have 8 passes on it, when we were checking rod bearings we found a crack through a rod journal. Well what the hell it was a used motor and it could have had more than 8 passes and who knows what done to it. Well when we pulled it out and found the lightening hole on the journal was so far off center that the thickness of the material hole to bearing surface was less than .125 on the cracked side and over .4 on the other. The fact this crank ever made it out the door was beyond belief.

A Bryant went back in but a Winberg is also a very good piece.
