For one of our cars, we are currently building a blown BBC for it and I am after some nice heads for it. Photo below.

    Brief spec of the motor...

Iron 4 bolt block (will be o ringed and filled)
    4.250 forged crank
4.375 bore with CP forged pistons
    Brooks 65 series rods
    Ed Pink 8/71 fresh blower
    Littlefield manifold

Just to give and idea, I am not looking to run super quick with this, I want to run realiable mid 7's and keep the upkeep a little lower than our Relentess altered shown in avatar above.

My question is what heads are there about these days ? I don't need and want to spend £1000's I'd like a good flowing head that will work. and as cheap as possible. Dont even mind iron if there good enough.

    Thanks

Car as i bought it (will be very different once we start the build)

    Head Recommendation

There's also the basic Dart 360 solid head. If you don't spring for a head company to do the killer cnc work on them they are pretty reasonable for price. Just get them cnc ported from Dart, they flow pretty well and should get you to where you want to be.:)

    Pro-Comp

A word of caution!! If you go the "Ebay PRO COMP" route,be prepared to have some coin left to make them right before you use them! I have friend who bought a pair off Ebay OZ and they were SHIT!! Although the port location/configuration is quite good, the overall tolerence level and machined finish is terrible to say the least:( The old saying applies,"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"
If it were me lash out on some Brodix or Dart's.The little extra invested will be saved in the long run.

    pro comp

I was told by the owner of our local speed shop that he quit selling the junk as soon as he got his first shipment. The push rod holes wouldn't line up with the rockers and one set the ports were off soo bad they were half a port off (GWYPF)

When I was running my Chevy Fred Mandolini Told me, for the money the Dart 360 was a good choice. Kevin Newburgh

I would reccomend the Dart 360's also. They are a good head and now there are many quality used ones out there. The last set I sold for $1900 cash for the pair, freshened and they flowed in the high 300's. I call that a good bang for the buck. :)

    Aluminum Heads

The best for the money I've found is the Patriot head. They appear to be the best "out of the box" bolt on We used.

The Brodix and Dart heads seem to hold up better than the cheaper {and lighter weight} heads out there. It's not uncommon for a quick 16/ Top Dragster guy to put 200+ passes a year on a blown engine. The cheaper heads usually don't hold up. Some of these heads are twelve pounds lighter per head than the Dart and Brodix castings. I sell the as cast versions for around $2200 with roller springs and titanium retainers.

just thought i'd throw my $0.02 in on this since i've run bbc's on both alcohol and nitro...

on my alky motors i've run brodix bb2's... and put TONS of runs on them with zero problems. studded and o-ringed block with the standard copper head gaskets.

to me it seems to more or less boil down to whether you use trick/specialized pieces or the basics. trick/specialized heads are cool and may gain you some hp... but they're pricey and often being highly modified means they are not readily available. and on a blown deal (especially if there's any nitro involved) the odds on wounding some things (even when you're careful) are pretty damn good. so you may end up with some hi-dollar junk... and then waiting to get new toys... and damn there's nothing i hate more than waiting AND paying a premium!

with the basic readily available heads (like box stock or mildly modified) such as brodix or dart you can pick them up a 'dime a dozen'... hell jeg's or summit can next day those pieces to ya in a pinch

so i guess my point is to stick with the old K.I.S.S method

    Def trying to K.I.S.S :)

We are running the numbers with our other car and this one is for me to drive, I want it simple but some power. These heads are up at moment for a very good price and I am tempted. I am lucky enough to be sponsored with inlet manifold and blower and possibly a carbon fibre hat so I wanna get some nice heads otherwise all a waste. Only spinning the blower at 20 over so not trying to rewrite the record books i just wanna buy ONE set of heads and be done. dont wanna buy cheap and spend loads keeping them good.

Thanks to all for replies so far.

    K.I.S.S.

it's an old saying... Keep It Simple Stupid

just don't get too hung up on the next 'gadget' approach... on a BBC deal that is blown i'd just be more interested in parts availability than super hi flow numbers. if you put all your egg$ in one basket with a super trick and super hi dollar set of heads and then hurt it (pretty common in all blown motors) you may only have the egg to play with. where as 'good' heads at a reasonable price are 'expendable' without making you bankrupt

    Yeah I know K.I.S.S :)

I am all for keeping things simple but these heads were too good to pass on for the money they were up for. Not looking to run these hard either.
