Cool em down

    what is best to cool hemi between rounds now that it is 100 degrees?

    Icool

    anything new to use?

    We use a shop vac hooked to the puke tank and just pull fresh air through it.

    I wouldn't stand too close to the shop vac. They make a lot of static electricity :eek:BOOM

    Shop vac

    Done it this way for years, never had a problem with it

    if you're not pulling the covers, do that, put fans on the open valve covers...

    pull the pan even if you aren't checking bearings...

    at least drain the oil, then put back in the tank or motor, will help radiate heat out of the pan.

    and...a 3/8 wrench up by that turnbuckle thingy on the injector helps too...:D

    I know a particular TFH that uses a shop vac to suckout/drain the oil between rounds

    Alot of the TFH guys do that if im not mistaken....

    Leaf blower here adapted to blow in one valve cover and out the other. Same thing used for the convertor or clutch.

    That vacuum deal sounds like a "here's your sign" thing waiting to happen.
    I know by design they are "supposed" to be explosion proof but.........

    An air vacuum is the best bet for stuff that might go boom.

    One other thing, make sure and switch the vacuum from one side to the other a couple of times. other wise you'll cool one side off more than the other due to pulling cooler air into one side only. i also run a small k&n filter on the open side to keep dirt out.

    Yes you can Craig , thats how I cool my converter between rounds ;)

    When you pull the pan to check and measure the rod bearings and check the valve train it will cool down.

    We pull the blower/intake...

    pull the heads,

    drop the pan,

    pull all 8 piston/rods out of the block.

    Check all and reinstall.

    New oil and we are down to ambient tempt.

    What kind of engine combination do you have and what kind of time you have between rounds of racing.

    We had waterheads at one time and would gravity feed water through the heads with a ball valve to control the flow. We would put 10 gallons of ambient temperature water through the heads between rounds. We would drain the water through the heads and back into another container and always kept water in the heads. It worked well for us and we did keep close eye on our head gaskets. We didn't keep water in the block.

    Oil was our other option. We would carry several jugs with enough oil to for each round of racing. After the run we would drain out all the oil and a few minutes before the next round we would pour in the ambient temp oil.

    We used fans on the with both of these options.

    All of the ideas in this thread are good. It all depends on how quick you need to make the turn.

    we have screw blower alcohol motor and when it gets down to 4 cars left only about 45 minutes between rounds

    we don't have time to take motor apart, usually get valves adjusted, clutch cooled, read computer and make decision and adjust clutch they are calling us to the lanes

    we do leave valve covers off to help cool if no trash blowing around

    If you have only 45 minutes, then I would for sure change the oil. You don't have to throw it away. There has been lots on this site about cooking the alcohol off. Cool oil will really bring the temp down when you are doing the burnout and backing up etc. Don't want to thin the oil out or start to detonate the engine.

    Agreed.

    Also, you can use one of those big pit fans to keep air moving across the engine.

    Fan
    Change Oil
    Pull Valve Covers

    You can get rid of alot of heat.
